Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) organized a virtual lecture on the impact of digital technologies on the management and protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on Monday. The session was aimed at equipping participants with essential skills to safeguard their creative works in the digital era.

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Tabrez Ahmad, an adjunct faculty member at MAAUN and the founding Dean of the MANUU Law School at Maulana Azad National Urdu University in Hyderabad. Prof. Ahmad, a former Vice-Chancellor of GD Goenka University, discussed how digital technologies have revolutionized the creation, sharing, and protection of intellectual property, while also presenting new challenges in managing IPR.

He highlighted that the ease of sharing digital content globally has led to increased cases of infringement, complicating the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Prof. Ahmad also introduced participants to modern tools like Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems, blockchain technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) that aid in IPR management.

The session included a discussion on the role of international organizations, such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in harmonizing IP laws and promoting global cooperation to address cross-border infringements.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students and faculty actively engaged with Prof. Ahmad, posing insightful questions that enriched the discussion. Notable contributions came from students of the computing department, including Saudat Shehu Karaye, Aishat Adam Opeyemi, Allamine Oucha Issakha, and Sheshe Fauziyya.

The lecture was attended by MAAUN President, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, and the Head of the International Office, Engr. Bashir Garba, among other distinguished attendees.
