Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) held its sixth online lecture series on Friday, focusing on “Mycotoxins and Chronic Diseases – A Public Health Perspective.” Organized by the university’s International Faculty, the lecture aimed to enhance e-learning and educate health science students about the risks posed by mycotoxins.
Dr. Sajid Mehmood, Assistant Professor at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University in Pakistan, presented on how mycotoxins impact the immune and metabolic systems and contribute to chronic conditions like cancer, liver, kidney, and cardiovascular diseases. He highlighted symptoms linked to mycotoxin exposure, including joint pain, rashes, and respiratory issues, while urging research for improved detection and prevention measures.
The virtual session saw participation from students, faculty, and university officials, including MAAUN President Prof. Mohammad Israr and the deans of the Schools of Health Science and Nursing Science, Dr. Kabir Mustpha Yakasai and Dr. Umar Bello.
