Meningitis Outbreak Claims Lives of 20 Students in Yobe
Meningitis, characterized by inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, is typically caused by bacterial or viral infections of the fluid surrounding these vital organs.
At least 20 boarding school students from three local government areas (LGAs) in Yobe State have tragically lost their lives due to a suspected outbreak of meningitis.The affected LGAs identified by state authorities are Potiskum, Fika, and Fune, which have been severely impacted by the current intense hot weather conditions.
This devastating development has sparked fear and apprehension among residents of the three LGAs, especially parents and guardians with children attending boarding secondary schools.

According to reliable sources, the fatalities occurred at Government Science Technical College, Government Girls Science Technical College, and Federal Government Girls College, all situated in Potiskum LGA.
Confirming the tragic incident, the State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss, revealed that 20 students have succumbed to the disease suspected to be meningitis.

In response to the outbreak, Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed the State Ministry of Education to temporarily relocate to Potiskum. Additionally, several affected students have been admitted to Potiskum Specialist Hospital for medical attention.
Commissioner Idriss emphasized the urgency of addressing the outbreak, acknowledging the formidable challenge it presents. He underscored the proactive measures being taken, including the deployment of ambulances to schools for emergency response and the establishment of temporary isolation centers.

Furthermore, Governor Buni has instructed the Ministry of Health to dispatch a medical team to investigate the outbreak's cause and provide necessary medication and support.Despite the tragic loss of life, Commissioner Idriss expressed hope for the affected students' recovery and urged vigilance in ensuring their well-being.
