MOUAU Vice Chancellor Advocates Integrated Systems for Sustainable Food Security at NOAN Conference
The Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, has stated that the future of food security in Nigeria depends on systems that balance productivity with environmental sustainability.
The Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, has stated that the future of food security in Nigeria depends on systems that balance productivity with environmental sustainability.

Prof. Akanwa made the remark while delivering a goodwill message at the Conference of the Association of Organic Agriculture Practitioners of Nigeria (NOAN), held at Hotel Royal Damgrete, Umuahia, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
She noted that achieving food security requires collaboration among universities, research institutions, government agencies, practitioners, and the private sector, adding that MOUAU remains committed to partnerships that will help reduce hunger and promote healthier food systems.
According to her, the university’s research, teaching, and extension services are increasingly focused on climate smart agriculture, sustainable land use, and the integration of indigenous knowledge with modern scientific innovation.
Prof. Akanwa also commended the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for its support of NOAN and its participation in the conference through a delegation led by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Marcus Olaniyi Ogunbiyi.

Highlights of the event included a student presentation on organic agriculture by MOUAU Demonstration Secondary School, the public presentation of a book on organic agriculture edited by Dr. Ogechi Jubilant Umeh, and the inauguration of an Organic Agriculture Policy Drafting Committee by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
