Murder at Ajayi Crowther: University Implements Mandatory Drug Tests

n response to a recent student death, Ajayi Crowther University has announced that students, porters, and security staff will be required to undergo compulsory drug tests, as stated in a report by the institution’s alumni executive. During the visit, the vice-chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University informed the alumni that all parties involved in the incident, including the alleged culprits, a porter, and two security officers accused of rape, are currently detained by the police pending legal action.

In response to a recent student death, Ajayi Crowther University has announced that students, porters, and security staff will be required to undergo compulsory drug tests, as stated in a report by the institution’s alumni executive. 

This  follows the tragic death of a student who was allegedly beaten to death by fellow students. The deceased, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student named Akro Jeffery Chamuke, was reportedly beaten to death by his peers over an alleged phone theft.

The alumni executive report, signed by its president, Hon Busoye Ogunlade, quoted the university’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Timothy Adebayo, saying, “He also stated that all students, university porters, and security personnel will be subjected to drug tests. If found guilty, they will be immediately expelled or dismissed.” This report was issued following a visit by the alumni executive to the university management to discuss the incident and propose solutions.

During the visit, the vice-chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University informed the alumni that all parties involved in the incident, including the alleged culprits, a porter, and two security officers accused of rape, are currently detained by the police pending legal action. “The porter from the hostel where the incident occurred remains in police custody. Also, the two security officers accused of rape are scheduled to appear in court today, May 30, 2024,” the report noted.

In addition to implementing drug testing, the university has bolstered its on-campus security, with civil defense officers now working in conjunction with existing security staff.

The report also noted that the parents of the deceased student visited the university and proposed methods to educate students about the appropriate avenues for reporting incidents, discouraging them from taking the law into their own hands. The alumni executive pledged its commitment to collaborate closely with the university management to uphold the institution’s vision and ensure student safety.

“We assured the management that the Alumni, as a collective, will continue to work hand in hand with the university to ensure that the vision of its establishment is thoroughly pursued,” the report stated. The vice-chancellor also mentioned that the school has learned from this incident and has enhanced security and surveillance measures, urging students to report any concerns to him and other management staff.
