NANS Advocates for ₦77,000 NYSC Allowance to Ease Financial Burden

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Senate President, Henry Okunomo, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to increase the monthly allowance for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to ₦77,000. Okunomo argued that the current allowance of ₦33,000 per month is insufficient given the current economic conditions.

In a letter sent to President Tinubu on Monday, Okunomo highlighted the need for an increase in NYSC allowances due to the recent rise in the minimum wage and the high cost of living. He emphasized that the NYSC scheme is crucial for youth development, national unity, and skill acquisition.

Okunomo pointed out that the recent increase in the minimum wage to ₦30,000 has not been reflected in the NYSC allowances, leaving corps members struggling financially. He also noted that the high cost of living and inflation have significantly reduced the purchasing power of the current allowances.
