NANS Commends President Tinubu for Holiday Transport Fare Reduction

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his approval of a 50% reduction in land transportation fares during the 2023 Yuletide season. This commendation comes in response to the announcement by the Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Committee on the Presidential Intervention on Public Transportation, Dele Alake, regarding plans to subsidize luxury buses for the ease of holiday travel.

NANS President, Mr. Pedro Obi, issued a statement on Wednesday in Enugu, praising Tinubu's commitment to the welfare of Nigerians. Obi noted that the decision demonstrated Tinubu's proactive step towards alleviating the financial burdens faced by travelers during the festive season. The discount, according to Obi, eases the financial strain on many Nigerians, making it more feasible for them to reunite with loved ones and participate in the festivities.

However, while appreciating the thoughtful gesture, NANS advocates for further consideration for students. Obi urged President Tinubu to extend the generosity to students across the nation, suggesting free transport for students who can be identified with their student identity cards. NANS, recognizing the financial challenges faced by students, believes that such an extension would significantly alleviate their financial constraints during the holiday season.

President Tinubu's approval covers a 50% reduction in land transportation fares from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024, across the country, encompassing Christmas and New Year celebrations. Additionally, zero fares for train transportation have been approved for all states within the same period. The initiative, as disclosed by Alake, aims to provide succor to the masses, with all logistics for implementation worked out between the Ministry of Transportation, transport unions, and luxury bus owners.
