NAPS Senate Announces National Mass Protest Against JAMB, Demands Registrar's Removal
The association alleges that the current JAMB Registrar's policies are detrimental to polytechnic education in Nigeria and show a lack of vision and concern for the well-being of students. NAPS has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Registrar, demanding the withdrawal of these policies or an honorable resignation.
The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has announced plans for a nationwide mass protest against the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), demanding the immediate removal of its Registrar. The protest is in response to what NAPS describes as "evil policies" targeting Nigerian polytechnic students, particularly those enrolled in part-time National Diploma (ND) programs who later transition to full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) courses.
The Senate arm of NAPS, representing polytechnic, monotechnic, and technical students across Nigeria and the diaspora, has unanimously agreed to mobilize students for this mass protest.
If the demands are not met within the 14-day period, which begins on August 29, 2024, NAPS has vowed to mobilize polytechnic students from campuses across Nigeria to converge at JAMB Headquarters in Abuja on September 12, 2024. The protest is scheduled to start at 7 a.m., with Eagle Square serving as the convergence point before marching to the JAMB office.
The association calls on all Student Union Government (SUG) Presidents, NAPS Zonal Executives, stakeholders, and polytechnic students nationwide to prepare for the protest and ensure a strong turnout. The planned demonstration underscores the association's commitment to defending the rights of polytechnic students and preserving the integrity of polytechnic education in Nigeria.
NAPS has urged the Federal Government to take immediate action, emphasizing the need for a JAMB leadership that balances intellectual capability with compassion for the students it serves.
The protest aims to bring national attention to the issues faced by polytechnic students and ensure that their voices are heard in the ongoing conversation about the future of education in Nigeria.
