Nasarawa State Gets First Private College of Nursing: Kariyoma College of Nursing Sciences, Lafia
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has approved the commencement of training at Kariyoma College of Nursing Sciences, Lafia, marking Nasarawa’s first private college for nursing.
In a significant development for the healthcare sector in Nasarawa State, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has officially granted approval for Kariyoma College of Nursing Sciences, Lafia, to begin training in nursing and midwifery. The authorization was confirmed in an official letter from the Council, dated October 2, 2024.
The letter, addressed to the proprietor of Kariyoma College, highlighted that the accreditation was given in compliance with Section 14 (Subsection 1&2) of the Nursing and Midwifery Registration Act (2004), which governs the establishment and operation of nursing education institutions in Nigeria.
This marks a historic milestone for the state, as Kariyoma College becomes the first private institution to offer nursing education in Nasarawa. The college, located in Lafia, aims to produce well-trained nurses and midwives to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals in Nigeria.
The approval comes after a rigorous process of evaluation and inspections by the Council to ensure the college met all regulatory requirements for training in nursing sciences. With this approval, the college is expected to begin enrolling students and offering courses that comply with national standards of nursing education and practice.
