In a significant move to enhance access to quality education, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed N280 million in student loans to 3,000 students across tertiary institutions in Nasarawa State.

The symbolic presentation of cheques took place on Wednesday in Lafia, the state capital. NELFUND’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Akintunde Sawyerr, highlighted that this initiative aims to address the financial challenges faced by students and improve educational accessibility in the state. Sawyerr emphasized the commitment to a transparent loan application process and encouraged students nationwide to take advantage of this opportunity to advance their education.

Acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s continuous support for students, Sawyerr also praised Habiba Balarabe Suleiman, Director General of the Nasarawa State Human Capital Development Agency (HCD), for her exceptional efforts in the successful implementation of the loan program in the state.

Sawyerr noted, “Today represents a key milestone in our collaboration with Nasarawa State. Out of 275,000 student loan applications nationwide, 12,000 were from Nasarawa State, with 3,000 applications verified. We are pleased to disburse N280 million to support these students. We urge other institutions to promptly submit their students' data to facilitate further disbursements.”

Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe, who represented Governor Abdullahi Sule at the event, expressed gratitude to NELFUND for its support. Akabe urged students to utilize the loan opportunity to secure their educational future. “Investing in education is investing in the future of our nation. Students should ensure they meet all requirements to benefit from this loan scheme,” he stated.

In her keynote address, Habiba Balarabe Suleiman commended NELFUND and the state leadership for their dedication to improving educational access. She stated, “The support from President Bola Tinubu reflects a strong commitment to human capital development. By making education more accessible and affordable, NELFUND is paving the way for a prosperous future for our younger generations.”

The loan disbursement is expected to significantly impact students' academic pursuits, providing crucial financial support for their educational needs.
