NIFST Northeast Chapter Holds First-Ever Food Science and Technology Summit at MAUTECH, Yola

The Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST), Northeast Chapter, on Monday, 15th September 2025, held its maiden Regional Food Science and Technology Summit at Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola.

The historic event, first of its kind in the Northeast, served as more than just a conference. It was a solutions-driven platform that brought together scientists, policymakers, entrepreneurs, traditional rulers, and community stakeholders to share knowledge, innovations, and strategies for sustainable food systems.

The summit opened with a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Umar, where members of the Institute presented their mission. Prof. Umar warmly received the delegation and pledged the university’s continuous support for initiatives that provide solutions to societal challenges.

With the theme “Food Safety and Nutrition Amid Insecurity and Climate Change,” discussions centered on addressing the pressing challenges facing Nigeria and the global community, while exploring opportunities in food security, processing, and nutrition.

In his welcome address, Chairman of NIFST Northeast Chapter, Dr. Kachataiya Gwandi Taawu, described the summit as a long-awaited milestone, stressing the vital role of food security in national development. He expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his support and to participants for their presence.

The Chairman of the Occasion, Pharm. Dr. Wafarininyi Theman, underscored the timeliness of the theme, noting that gatherings like this create opportunities for collaboration and sustainable solutions to insecurity and climate-related food challenges.

Speaking on behalf of NIFST National President, Prof. Bolanle Aishat Akinwande, urged participants to champion food safety and security by taking preventive measures, adhering to standards, and creating greater public awareness.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Suleiman Saidu Bashir, Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency, emphasized the urgent need to address the interconnected issues of food availability, safety, and nutrition. He highlighted the role of proper nutrition in national health and productivity, while warning against the dangers of foodborne diseases.

The summit attracted distinguished guests, including policymakers, academicians, traditional leaders, and industry experts.

The Special Guest of Honour, First Lady of Adamawa State, Hajiya Lami Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Neido Geoffrey Kafulto.

The Royal Father of the Day, Emir of Muri, Alh. Abbas Njidda Tafida, was represented by the Secretary of the Muri Emirate Council, Alh. Usman Sa’idu Gassol.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security was represented by M.J. Salihu Musa, a senior director in the ministry of Agriculture. 

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Council of Food Science and Technology, Mrs. Veronica Nkechi Eze, was represented by Prof. Kalep Bulus Filli.

The university’s principal officers and management team also graced the occasion.

In recognition of their contributions, awards were presented during the event. The Special Guest of Honour was honored with an Award of Excellence for her commitment to advancing food science and technology in the region. Similarly, Prof. Ibrahim Umar, Vice-Chancellor of MAU, received an Award of Excellence in Leadership and Innovation for his remarkable efforts in advancing the university.

A major highlight of the summit was the unveiling of locally fabricated food-processing innovations, including a solar-powered peanut coating machine and a multi-purpose edible oil extraction machine. Exhibitions of food products and consumables also drew the admiration of guests and participants.

The summit marked a significant milestone for the Northeast, establishing a vibrant platform where innovation meets policy to drive food security, nutrition, and sustainability in the face of insecurity and climate change.

In his vote of thanks, the Chairman LOC, Dr. Musa Halilu appreciated the guests and participants for coming and in particular, he thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his unwavering support towards hosting the long-awaited summit.
