Tachie-Menson highlighted that Ghana has been representing the continent at the competition for almost two decades, showcasing the spelling and vocabulary prowess of African students. In a bid to further promote literacy and spelling skills among Nigerian youth, the foundation partnered with Lucid Education Initiative to facilitate Nigeria's participation in the bee.
“This collaboration aims to ignite a passion for spelling and literacy among Nigerian youths,” Tachie-Menson emphasized. “The Scripps National Spelling Bee is more than just a contest; it is a celebration of discipline, word mastery, and academic excellence. By providing Nigerian students and schools with a global spotlight, it will enhance cognitive skills, critical thinking, and mental agility in young learners, fostering curiosity and a lifelong love for language and learning.”

The foundation has already initiated a rigorous selection process for students to compete at the national level, beginning with private schools and later extending to public schools. The ultimate champion of this yet-to-be-unveiled spelling contest will secure a coveted spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, to be held in Washington, D.C., in May 2025.
Afolajimi Akinyoyenu, Chief Executive Officer of the Lucid Education Initiative, highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s participation. “This program provides a platform for Nigerian youths to showcase their literacy prowess on a global stage,” he stated. “It challenges the prevailing narrative that the African child only hungers for food. Instead, it underscores the importance of literacy and spelling education.”
The Scripps National Spelling Bee promises a thrilling mental challenge, with spellers having just 75 seconds to ask questions and 90 seconds to spell each word.
