NMCN Approves Internship and Indexing for ESUT, Other Nursing Schools After 19 Years

With the new approval, ESUT Teaching Hospital will immediately recruit 50 interns, enhancing the state’s nursing manpower. Dr. Abubakar praised the state for implementing the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), aimed at retaining qualified nurses.

NMCN Approves Internship and Indexing for ESUT, Other Nursing Schools After 19 Years

In a significant development, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has approved the internship programme for the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, after nearly two decades. The council also approved the indexing of nursing students at the Colleges of Nursing, including the recently upgraded School of Nursing in Awgu.

The approvals were announced by Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, Registrar of NMCN, during a courtesy visit to Governor Peter Mbah. Dr. Abubakar commended the Mbah administration for its investment in the nursing colleges, highlighting the provision of infrastructure and attention to health workers' welfare.

Governor Mbah, represented by Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, expressed regret over the 19-year stagnation but affirmed the administration's commitment to revitalizing the nursing sector through infrastructure, training, and remuneration improvements. The state aims to produce 3,000 nurses annually, with plans to upgrade nursing institutions to world-class standards.
