NMEP Partners with FUNAAB to Expand Malaria Vector Surveillance in Ogun State

The National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) has initiated plans to expand its Sentinel Site Activities in Ogun State with the support of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). During a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Professor Babatunde Kehinde, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Olukayode Akinyemi, NMEP discussed its strategic collaboration aimed at intensifying malaria vector surveillance across the state.

FUNAAB’s sentinel site, one of two newly selected locations, will play a pivotal role in monitoring insecticide resistance in malaria vectors. This initiative is part of a larger collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Health, the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), and supported by Global Funds (GF). The project aims to enhance vector control measures and better understand the population dynamics and behavioral patterns of malaria-carrying insects.

Since 2020, the NMEP has monitored insecticide resistance levels in Ogun State, and this new phase will introduce monthly malaria vector surveillance to gather more extensive data on local vector bionomics. Professor Olufunmilayo Idowu from FUNAAB's Department of Pure and Applied Zoology has been appointed as the Principal Investigator to oversee these activities.

NMEP will supply essential entomological equipment, while FUNAAB will contribute laboratory and insectary space, along with logistical support. The expansion, set to commence in November 2024, will also provide hands-on learning opportunities for students, further enhancing both academic and public health efforts to combat malaria in Ogun State.

This collaboration marks a significant step in malaria control, as it strengthens surveillance efforts and expands research opportunities, reinforcing Ogun State's commitment to reducing malaria transmission
