NOUN Director Urges Government Support for Inmate Education Programmes

He stressed NOUN’s commitment to providing education for all, urging the government to expand its backing for inmate education and rehabilitation initiatives across the country.
The Director of the Abeokuta Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Dr. Oyekunle Adegboyega, has called on the government to enhance support for rehabilitation programmes in correctional facilities nationwide to make tertiary education more accessible to inmates.
Dr. Adegboyega made this appeal during the convocation ceremony of 13 inmates at the Abeokuta Correctional Service Examination Centre, Ogun State. He stressed NOUN’s commitment to providing education for all, urging the government to expand its backing for inmate education and rehabilitation initiatives across the country.
The event highlighted NOUN’s success in offering second chances through education, with dignitaries including the Comptroller of the Nigeria Correctional Service for Ogun State, Chief Olusola Adeoye, the representative of the Olowu of Owu, the Hon. Commissioner of Education, the State Coordinator for NECO, and the representative of the National Coordinator of NOUN Correctional Centres in attendance.
Both the Comptroller and the Olowu of Owu commended NOUN’s management for extending the opportunity of education to inmates, praising the university’s efforts to transform lives through learning.
