NOUN Leads Africa in Open and Distance Learning, Says VC

The Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, has reaffirmed the University’s position as the foremost institution in Open and Distance Learning, ODL, in Africa.
Prof. Uduma stated this on Tuesday in Enugu while declaring open a three-day workshop on Question Setting and Question Banking for the University’s 2026 Second Semester Pen-on-Paper examinations in the South-East Zone.
He described NOUN as the largest university in Sub-Saharan Africa and a unique institution at the forefront of higher education on the continent.
"The COVID-19 pandemic globally demonstrated that ODL is a major pathway for the future of higher education," he said. "We are aware there is still some hesitation about NOUN from conventional universities, but the world has seen the relevance of ODL today."
The VC urged facilitators to see their engagement with NOUN as a strategic partnership and to be thorough in setting questions that reflect learning outcomes and academic integrity.
He also stressed the need for confidentiality in managing the question bank.
The workshop, which involves facilitators from NOUN’s nine faculties, is aimed at strengthening the quality and credibility of the University’s assessment processes.
Prof. Uduma added that NOUN remains committed to expanding access to quality education through flexible learning models, while maintaining standards that meet global best practices in open and distance education.
