In celebration of Global Media and Information Literacy Day, the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja will host two workshops focused on the crucial role of media and information literacy in fostering an informed and engaged society. 

The workshops, themed “New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information,” are scheduled for Thursday, October 24, and Friday, October 25, 2024, starting at 10:00 AM each day at the Conference Hall, NOUN headquarters.

Jointly organized by the Federal Ministry of Information, the International Media and Information Literacy Institute of NOUN (IMILI-NOUN), and UNESCO, the workshops aim to address the challenges of misinformation and promote strategies for verifying and sharing accurate information in today's digital landscape.

Dr. Lateef Adelakun, Head of the Mass Communication Department at NOUN and host of the workshops, emphasized that the first day's focus will be on community engagement, particularly through targeted campaigns in religious institutions and educational settings. The goal is to encourage responsible media consumption and dissemination among all age groups, especially the youth. The workshop will also cater to Mass Communication students, media educators, and members of the university community.

Notable speakers include Dr. Jacob Shagbaor Suemo from the Nile University of Nigeria, who will serve as the guest speaker on the first day, while NOUN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olufemi Peters will be the chief host for both events. 

The second day's workshop will target policymakers, communication professionals, civil society organizations, Mass Communication students, academics, and members of the university community. Mardia Umar, a broadcast journalist with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Radio in Abuja, will be the guest speaker for this session.

Global Media and Information Literacy Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness and celebrate the advancements made in promoting media and information literacy for all.
