In a surprising announcement during the inauguration of Tertiary Education Fund (TET-fund) funded projects at Ebonyi State University, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has vowed to appoint a politician as the next Vice Chancellor of the university.

The current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chigozie Ogbu, a two-term Deputy Governor of the state, is nearing the end of his tenure at the university. Governor Nwifuru praised Ogbu's outstanding achievements and stated that such success could only have been possible through a background in politics.

"We need someone with the political will and academic structure for the position as people must not show their strength by making noise. When appointing the next VC, it will be from the political angle as the university belongs to all of us," Governor Nwifuru declared.

He emphasized that a Vice Chancellor with a political background would better relate to the community and understand the political and administrative aspects necessary for effective university management.

The Minister of Works, Chief David Umahi, also extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to education development in the country. He noted that the president approved an upward review of the education tax in recognition of TET-fund's role in tertiary education development.

The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Mr. Sonny Echono, disclosed that the executed projects were in line with TETFund guidelines, representing a combined effort from the 2011–15 and 2016–19 annual interventions.

Prof. Chigozie Ogbu, the current Vice Chancellor, expressed gratitude to TETFund and pledged judicious utilization of the projects.

The political twist in the selection of the next Vice Chancellor has sparked discussions within the academic community, raising questions about the intersection of politics and academic leadership in educational institutions.
