NYSC Denounces Viral ‘Ransom Clause’ Rumours, Reaffirms Commitment to Corps Member Safety
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially debunked a viral social media report claiming the existence of a "ransom clause" in its service guidelines. The Scheme described the claims as malicious and designed to create unnecessary panic among corps members and their families.
In a formal statement, the NYSC management clarified that there is no policy—written or implied—suggesting that the Scheme or the Federal Government would be absolved of responsibility in the event of an abduction or that families are expected to negotiate ransoms independently.
The Scheme reassured the public that the safety of corps members remains its top priority. To ensure a secure service year, the NYSC highlighted its ongoing collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Army.
"The Scheme is in constant liaison with security agencies to ensure that corps lodges, orientation camps, and places of primary assignment are well-protected," the statement noted.
While dismissing the rumours, the NYSC urged corps members to remain security-conscious and adhere to the following safety protocols:
Avoid Night Travel: Reiteration of the strict ban on travelling after 6:00 p.m.
Official Channels Only: Corps members are advised to verify all information through the official NYSC website and verified social media handles.
Movement Reports: All interstate movements must be officially sanctioned by the State Coordinator.
The management called on the media and the general public to disregard the misinformation, noting that such "fake news" undermines the morale of youths currently serving their fatherland. The Scheme remains committed to its mandate of national integration and youth empowerment under a secure environment.
