Organ Trafficking in Nigeria, A Growing Concern BUK Professor Aliyu Abdu Lament

A recent revelation by Professor Aliyu Abdu, a professor of medicine at Bayero University, Kano, and consultant nephrologist at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, has shed light on the alarming issue of organ trafficking in Nigeria.

According to Professor Abdu, at least 651 kidneys valued at over $41 billion were trafficked and transplanted illegally in Nigeria between 2015 and 2020.

The law prohibits the sale of human organs, and offenders can face fines or imprisonment.

To combat organ trafficking, Nigeria needs to strengthen its legal frameworks, improve healthcare infrastructure, and raise awareness about the trade. The government should also establish ethical donation programs and provide support to victims of organ trafficking.
