Otti Vows to Boost ABSU Funding

In a bid to address challenges faced by Abia State University (ABSU) and elevate its standing among tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Governor Dr. Alex Otti has pledged to increase the monthly subvention for the university. Governor Otti conveyed his commitment during a meeting with the executives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ABSU Chapter, led by the Zonal Coordinator (ASUU National), Dr. Happiness Uduak. Acknowledging the prompt payment of salaries and benefits under his administration, Otti assured that the presented demands by ASUU were reasonable.

The governor emphasized the importance of financial independence for universities and encouraged ABSU ASUU to explore avenues for contributing to the institution's financial autonomy. He expressed surprise at the reported "18 months salary differential" and 11 months salary arrears owed to lecturers by the previous administration, promising to address these issues.

Governor Otti urged a shift in mindset from dependency to financial independence, stating, "We need to think of being financially independent. Even from research alone, if there is anything happening in the University, we should be able to generate enough resources to do a few things."

Furthermore, he proposed strengthening the corporate governance of the institution and promised to set up a visitation panel to address various issues within the university. The governor concluded by expressing his commitment to supporting ABSU ASUU in their efforts to contribute to the financial independence of the university.

In response, Dr. Happiness Uduak, the leader of the ASUU delegation, commended Governor Otti for the developmental projects undertaken in the state since assuming office. The governor's proactive approach to the concerns raised by ASUU signals a positive step towards enhancing the educational landscape in Abia State.
