Oxlade Reveals Why He Dropped Out of LASU in Final Year
Nigerian singer Oxlade, whose real name is Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, has revealed in a recent podcast why he dropped out of Lagos State University (LASU) in his final year. He described the environment as chaotic, with gangs targeting him due to his appearance.
Nigerian music sensation Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, widely known as Oxlade, has opened up about his dramatic decision to leave Lagos State University (LASU) during his final year. In a recent podcast, Oxlade shared the personal and challenging circumstances that led to his departure from the institution.
Oxlade recounted a turbulent period at LASU, revealing, “I dropped out of the university in my final year because it was a crazy time. There were some gangs after me because I’m a fine boy. Being a fine boy makes you a target. It’s either you join them or they get you.” He described the environment as one where being in the spotlight could attract dangerous attention, prompting his decision to leave.
He also noted that LASU has since evolved, with a stronger focus on academics and a crackdown on the disruptive behavior he experienced. “Now, they’re more focused on academics. I think they’ve realized how fragile life is and how important it is to pursue your dreams,” Oxlade added. He acknowledged that the university’s approach has improved, contrasting it with his time there, which he described as “a hot period.”
Following his departure from LASU, Oxlade faced additional personal struggles. “After I left school, I ran away from home because I couldn’t tell my family why I dropped out. They wouldn’t understand; they would just think I was making excuses,” he revealed. This emotional distance led him to feel like he had let his family and grandmother down.
Despite the pressure he felt, Oxlade’s reunion with his grandmother was surprisingly calm. He reflected, “The craziest part was that when my grandma finally saw me, she was so calm about it. All that pressure I put on myself was just in my head.”
