Pregnant Woman, Fresh Graduate, and Bride-to-Be Die in Rivers State Illegal Refinery Explosion

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed that a pregnant woman, a recent graduate, and a young lady preparing for her upcoming wedding were among the casualties of a devastating explosion at an illegal refining site in the Ibaa community, Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to a statement released by Olufemi Ayodele, the spokesperson of the NSCDC, Rivers State Command, the incident claimed the lives of 18 individuals, leaving 25 others injured but fortunate enough to be rescued by NSCDC operatives.

Preliminary investigations into the Sunday night tragedy suggest that the explosion was triggered by a local refinery cooking pot situated dangerously close to an oil reservoir containing highly combustible materials. As temperatures rose uncontrollably, a massive fire broke out, leading to the catastrophic incident.

Ayodele, while expressing condemnation for the incident, stressed the urgent need for collective efforts and stronger collaborations involving traditional institutions, community youths, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to combat illegal oil bunkering activities in various communities. He emphasized that credible intelligence and information sharing with the NSCDC, the primary agency tasked with safeguarding oil pipelines and critical national assets in Rivers State, are essential components of this fight.

Basil Igwebueze, the NSCDC State Commandant, provided further insights into the tragic event, noting that the fire started late at night, which contributed to the high number of victims who suffered severe burns. Among the victims were several youths, a pregnant woman, and a young lady whose wedding was scheduled for the coming month.

While offering condolences to the families affected by this devastating incident, Igwebueze issued a stern warning against the presence and activities of illegal local refineries in communities across the state. He highlighted the immense environmental damage and "irreparable loss" caused by such activities, calling on critical stakeholders to unite and vigorously combat illegal oil bunkering in Rivers State.

The explosion in Ibaa community serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers associated with illegal refining operations and the need for collective action to protect lives, the environment, and critical national assets.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.
