President Tinubu Appoints UNILORIN Prof. Olusegun Ige as Director-General of NGSA
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Prof. Olusegun Omoniyi Ige from the University of Ilorin as the Director-General of the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, effective June 21, 2024.
In a significant recognition of the University of Ilorin's contributions to academia and national development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Prof. Olusegun Omoniyi Ige as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA). The appointment, which took effect on June 21, 2024, underscores the university's reputation for excellence in higher education.
The official appointment letter, signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, states that Prof. Ige's tenure will last for an initial term of five years, in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (Establishment) Act, 1999.

On July 26, 2024, Prof. Ige visited the Vice Chancellor's Office, accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, Prof. Baba Abdullahi Alafara, to formally announce his new role. During the meeting, he expressed his vision for the NGSA, highlighting his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s solid mineral sector and enhancing the country's position on the global stage.
Prof. Ige emphasized, “The development of any nation is tied to the value and benefits of its mineral resources. I aim to position Nigeria as a leading player in the global community.” He further noted that with proper management, Nigeria’s natural resources, particularly solid minerals, could significantly increase the nation's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). He stated, “We should not solely depend on oil; our solid minerals can substantially boost our economy.”

In welcoming Prof. Ige to his new role, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, commended the Federal Government for recognizing Prof. Ige's exceptional qualities. He expressed confidence in Prof. Ige's ability to succeed in his new role and urged him to represent the university well. Prof. Egbewole remarked, “Never forget the UNILORIN spirit, which makes our institution the darling of all.”
The Vice Chancellor also encouraged faculty members to continue demonstrating diligence and resilience, noting that Prof. Ige's appointment reflects his commitment to teaching, learning, and community service.

Prof. Baba Abdullahi Alafara, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, congratulated Prof. Ige, praising his resourcefulness and dedication. Prof. Alafara highlighted Prof. Ige's leadership role in organizing a recent international conference, showcasing his capabilities and dedication.
Additionally, he reaffirmed the Faculty’s commitment to the Vice Chancellor’s Vision ‘1-10-500’, aiming to position the Faculty among the best in Nigeria, the top 10 in Africa, and within the top 500 globally.
