Prof. Ajao of UNILORIN Urges Federal Government to Boost Investment in Medical Education

Prof. Salihu Moyosore Ajao, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Ilorin, has called for increased federal and stakeholder investment in medical education to address Nigeria's growing healthcare needs.

In an interview with the UNILORIN Bulletin on September 9, 2024, Prof. Ajao emphasized that current funding and resources for medical training are inadequate. He highlighted the necessity for substantial financial support and advanced facilities to produce qualified medical professionals capable of meeting the nation’s healthcare demands.

Prof. Ajao, who previously served as Chairman of the University of Ilorin Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), stressed that human life is invaluable and demands the best possible training standards. He acknowledged the resilience and resourcefulness of Nigerian medical educators who continue to deliver despite limited resources, ensuring that Nigerian-trained doctors are respected globally.

To further improve healthcare in Nigeria, Prof. Ajao advocated for increased funding for teaching hospitals to reduce the need for medical tourism and enhance the quality of local healthcare services. He also recommended special incentives for medical educators and practitioners to boost their motivation and contributions to the healthcare system.

Moreover, Prof. Ajao urged the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Medical and Dental Registration Council of Nigeria (MDCN), and other regulatory bodies to enforce stringent standards for medical programs to prevent the dilution of quality.

Prof. Ajao praised Kwara State University (KWASU) for its new medical training programs and the conversion of the old Ilorin General Hospital into the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH). He noted that these developments would alleviate pressure on the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) and benefit medical trainees from various institutions.
