In a thought-provoking 27th Inaugural Lecture, Professor Muhammed Olawale Hakeem Amuda of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to explore local solutions to its numerous challenges. The lecture, titled "The Vicegerent: The Evolution of a Contemporary Alágbẹ̀dẹ," took place on October 2, 2024, at the J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, with UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, presiding.

Professor Amuda, a distinguished expert in Welding Process Analysis and Surface Modification, lamented the over-reliance on imported solutions despite the wealth of local expertise available. He criticized the absence of a coherent developmental agenda in Nigeria, which he believes should guide research endeavors in both academic and research institutions.

During his lecture, Prof. Amuda shared insights into his research journey, outlining his significant contributions to program development and the innovation landscape. He discussed his pioneering work with clays, particularly in the adaptation of Ipetumodu (Montmorillonite) potters’ clay for mold production in foundries. His findings have laid the groundwork for subsequent research by peers, including Professor Simeon Ibitoye from Obafemi Awolowo University.

Prof. Amuda also highlighted his advancements in the field of welding and surface modification. He introduced innovative techniques such as cryogenic cooling and elemental powder addition to combat grain growth in standard-grade ferritic stainless-steel welds produced through TIG-torch melting. His research has revolutionized surface modification processes, utilizing an economic oxy-acetylene flame combined with a self-shielding system to achieve defect-free hybrid surface composites on mild steel.

Looking ahead, Professor Amuda revealed plans to delve into computational materials engineering to better understand the re-solidification phenomena during fusion welding and surface modification, moving beyond traditional experimental methods.
