Delta State University, Abraka, recently hosted its 7th Valedictory Lecture, where Professor (Mrs) Diana Oritsegbubemi Arubayi, a distinguished academic, delivered a compelling address on the theme of "Family Values: Redeeming the Lost Virtues for Future Generations."

The lecture, which doubled as a celebration of her 70th birthday and retirement after thirty-four years of dedicated service, underscored the essential role of family values in shaping morally grounded individuals and fostering a cohesive society.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor Professor Andy Egwunyenga emphasized the importance of instilling family values in children from an early age, describing it as a fundamental factor in their development. He noted that these values act as a moral compass, helping young people navigate societal challenges and contribute positively to their communities.

Prof. Egwunyenga acknowledged Prof. (Mrs) Arubayi's dedication to raising awareness on the significance of family values and praised her immense contributions to academia, research, and mentorship at Delta State University.

During her lecture, Prof. (Mrs) Arubayi, a Professor of Home Economics, highlighted how the family, as the foundation of society, has evolved with changing times, often at the expense of traditional values. She expressed concern about the increasing individualism and technology-driven lifestyles, which she believes have eroded family bonds and essential virtues. Prof. Arubayi advocated for nurturing virtues such as honesty, respect, responsibility, and humility within families, viewing these as vital pillars for a stable society.

The event was attended by prominent figures from academia, including Prof. Samuel Asagba, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Delta State University; Prof. Snapps Jacob Oboreh, Vice Chancellor of Southern Delta University, Ozoro; Emeritus Prof. Eric Arubayi, former Vice Chancellor of DELSU and husband of the valedictory lecturer; as well as other university officials, faculty, students, family members, and friends.

The lecture concluded with the Vice Chancellor’s appeal for Prof. (Mrs) Arubayi to continue her mentorship by supervising her remaining Ph.D. students for another year, underscoring her lasting influence on Delta State University's academic community.
