In a profound and enlightening discourse, Professor Saadatu Hassan Liman, a distinguished scholar from the Department of Islam and Development Studies at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, delivered the 35th Inaugural Lecture Series on September 26, 2023. The topic of her lecture, "Deconstructing The Notion Of Oppression And Suppression Of Women In Islam: Revisiting The Islamic Versus Universal Concepts of Human Rights," shed light on the rights and status of women in Islam.

Professor Liman passionately argued that the key to addressing the oppression and suppression faced by Muslim women today lies in the strict application of the fundamental human rights of women as outlined in the Qur'an and exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).

She emphasized that these rights, which encompass aspects such as marriage, divorce, property, inheritance, custody of children, and the system of reward and punishment, have been granted to Muslim women by Islam over 1400 years ago. Professor Liman highlighted that these rights are unparalleled and have not been equaled by any religious civilization or human rights organization, including the United Nations.

During her lecture, Professor Liman explored various aspects of gender equality in Islam, the role of women in leadership within the family, women's education, issues related to child and forced marriages, divorce rights, the concept of polygamy, women's political participation, and the significance of the veil (Hijab). She also delved into the challenges faced by Muslim women due to traditional cultural practices.

In attendance were notable dignitaries, including the Governor of Nasarawa State, who commended Professor Saadatu Hassan Liman for her groundbreaking achievements and contributions to Islamic Studies.
