Lecturers preparing for elevation to the rank of professor at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education have been advised to work and prepare for it because such position is not for all-comers, Myschoolnews gathered.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, gave the advice during the statutory meeting of the senate on Wednesday, October 25, 2023.

The vice-chancellor, while emphasising that the number of academic publications is not the only index for promotion, insisted that only competent persons would be promoted.

“Even though you have one thousand publications, you must show capacity that you merit to be a professor because the number of publications is not the only yardstick”, he insisted.

He noted that as experts in their fields, professors are expected to have the competence to engage in advanced research and teaching because of their pivotal role in shaping the intellectual and professional development of their students.

Professor Onuchuku frowned at a situation where those who fail promotion interviews quarrel with the Head of Department, instead, he advised them to follow the right administrative procedures rather than becoming confrontational.

In a related development, the vice-chancellor directed the Quality Assurance Unit to devise innovative strategies to check examination malpractice in the university. He said such a move would put the institution ahead of the new tricks students are employing to cheat during examinations.

Meanwhile, Heads of Departments have been directed to ensure that hard copies of students’ results are kept in the departments, faculties, and exams and records office as backups even after the soft copies have been uploaded on the students’ portals.

The vice-chancellor said doing so would forestall a situation where the students are denied graduation or made to re-sit for an examination in the event of a system failure. "Let us do things that will help the students, the VC said.
