Redeemer’s University (RUN) has officially joined the global scientific community in celebrating its Pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oyewale Tomori, as the distinguished virologist marks his 80th birthday today, Tuesday, February 3, 2026. 

In a congratulatory message, the University Management lauded the octogenarian for his foundational role in establishing the institution's academic excellence and his peerless contributions to global public health.

Professor Tomori is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential scientists. His storied career includes:

Virology Pioneer: Extensive research on viral diseases, including Lassa Fever and Ebola.

WHO Leadership: Serving as the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Virologist for Africa, where he led the polio eradication initiative on the continent.

Academic Leadership: Steering Redeemer’s University during its formative years (2004–2011) and serving as a past President of the Nigerian Academy of Science.

"We celebrate a man of immense grace and scientific integrity," the University stated. "Professor Tomori’s tenure as our first Vice-Chancellor set the trajectory for our current status as a leader in genomics and infectious disease research." 

The University community, alongside the Nigerian Academy of Science, extended prayers for his continued good health and "fullness of life" as he enters this new decade.
