In a commendable initiative, the Rotary Club of Umudike Central, District 9142, Nigeria, in partnership with the North Cobb Rotary Club, District 6900, USA, has distributed reusable sanitary pads to more than 400 female secondary school students in Abia State.

This marks the third consecutive year of collaboration for the annual event, under the banner of the "Rotary Year of Service after 2022-23 and 2023-24 in the state."

The distribution events took place across several schools in the region, including Community Secondary School, Ihim Ibere; Methodist High School, Oboro; and Michael Okpara University Demonstration Secondary School, Umudike, among others.

During these events, Rotarian Seline Ilochi, the president of the Central District, emphasized the significance of the program, themed "Pad a Girl," which aimed to raise awareness among students about menstrual hygiene and provide support to the girl-child.

In her remarks, Ilochi highlighted that these reusable pads not only promote safe menstrual hygiene practices but also contribute to environmental sustainability by significantly reducing waste associated with disposable pads.

Addressing the students, Rotarian Onyinye Ralph-Nwachukwu, the public image maker, emphasized the importance of proper pad usage and maintenance to ensure good menstrual hygiene. She advised students to wash the pads gently with water after every six hours of use and sun-dry them before reuse to prevent bacterial infections.

Furthermore, Ralph-Nwachukwu encouraged students to engage in community service through initiatives like the Interact Club, leveraging their time and talents for the betterment of society.

The distribution events also saw the participation of past assistant governors, Njoku Uche and Obuora Okoye, assistant governor Vince Asor, and governor Chinonyerem Obinwa, who provided practical guidance to students on how to effectively use the pads.

Both students and teachers expressed gratitude to the Rotary districts and members for their generosity, affirming their commitment to using the pads responsibly as instructed.

This laudable initiative not only addresses an essential aspect of female health but also underscores the Rotary Club's dedication to community service and social responsibility.
