Safe Schools Initiative: Commendation for National Response Center's Proactive Approach
In a commendable display of proactive measures and a commitment to ensuring the safety of schools across the country, Mr. Nebath Mela, the Education Coordinator for Save the Children International (SCI) in Borno Area Office, recently visited the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC). During his visit, he lauded the NSSRCC's approach, which prioritizes prevention over reaction when it comes to safeguarding educational institutions in Nigeria. Mr. Nebath Mela expressed his appreciation for the considerable efforts undertaken at the NSSRCC, particularly the focus on preventive measures designed to create safer learning environments. This approach marks a departure from being solely reactionary in responding to threats against schools. By emphasizing prevention, the NSSRCC aims to reduce the vulnerability of educational institutions to security risks.
Furthermore, Mr. Mela indicated his interest in contributing to the activities of the NSSRCC by offering capacity-building opportunities for various stakeholders, with a special emphasis on community-level engagement. Strengthening the capacities of communities and stakeholders plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective implementation of safety measures and early warning systems. As part of their commitment to supporting the NSSRCC, Save the Children International (SCI) has sponsored radio jingles aimed at promoting Safe Schools. This initiative underscores the organization's dedication to raising awareness and promoting safety within the education sector.
Mr. Mela stressed the importance of training the immediate school-based committees, and empowering them with the knowledge of early warning systems. This training equips them to take proactive measures when signals of potential threats are detected, thereby enhancing the overall safety of schools. During his visit to the NSSRCC, Mr. Nebath Mela was accompanied by Mr. Badar Musa. Together, they expressed their delight at the deliberate strategies and initiatives implemented to ensure safer schools in Nigeria. These strategies include the Safe Schools Project, which led to the establishment of the NSSRCC.
Reflecting on the alarming trend of schools becoming targets of attacks over the past five to ten years, Mr. Mela expressed optimism that the situation is being effectively addressed. He acknowledged the collective effort of stakeholders in confronting these challenges, particularly with the implementation of the Safe Schools Project and the subsequent inauguration of the NSSRCC. In response to Mr. Mela's commendation, Dr. Tersoo Shaapera, the Commander of the NSSRCC, explained that the center operates within the headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). It is fully supported by Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, the Commandant General of NSCDC. The NSSRCC serves as a coordinating hub for various agencies responsible for safeguarding schools, facilitating a collaborative and proactive approach to school security.
NSSRCC's commitment to a proactive stance on school safety is receiving well-deserved recognition and commendation. The support and engagement of organizations like Save the Children International (SCI) further strengthen the nationwide effort to ensure the safety of educational institutions. By prioritizing prevention and early warning systems, the NSSRCC is actively contributing to a safer learning environment for Nigeria's students, an achievement that is vital for the future of the nation.
