Security Operatives Attack Channels TV Crew During UniAbuja VC Protest
Security agents attacked Channels Television crew covering a protest by University of Abuja professors over the vice-chancellor selection process, vandalizing their vehicle and detaining them for over an hour.
Channels Television’s crew was attacked by security agents while covering a protest by professors at the University of Abuja (UniAbuja). The protest was sparked by dissatisfaction over the selection process for the institution's new vice-chancellor following the exit of Professor Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah on July 1, 2024.
The security operatives manhandled the journalists, vandalized their vehicle, and detained them for over an hour. Footage from the incident showed the agents forcing the crew out of their vehicle and questioning their presence on the school premises.
The protest revolves around allegations of irregularities in the vice-chancellor selection process, with claims that Professor Aisha Maikudi, a professor of International Law, is being favored despite her alleged ineligibility under the advertised criteria. Critics claim Maikudi's rapid rise to acting VC in 2022 was influenced by her father's political connections in Katsina State.
The Pro-Chancellor, Sadiq Ismaila Kaita, however, dismissed the allegations, insisting that due process is being followed. The incident highlights the ongoing crisis at the university and raises concerns about press freedom in such situations.
