Senate Urges Medical and Dental Council to Allow Nigerian Medical Graduates from Ukraine and Sudan to Sit for Exams

Senator Olalere highlighted that the issue of medical graduates from Ukrainian universities has been a concern for the National Assembly since 2022. He noted that in 2023, the House of Representatives and the Ministry of Health reached an agreement with the MDCN to allow these students to participate in qualifying exams like other students.

Senate Urges Medical and Dental Council to Allow Nigerian Medical Graduates from Ukraine and Sudan to Sit for Exams

The Senate has urged the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to permit Nigerian medical graduates from Ukraine and Sudan, where academic activities were not disrupted by war, to take its exams in July and November without discrimination.

In a motion titled "Discrimination Against Medical Graduands from Ukraine by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria," sponsored by Senator Oyewumi Olalere (PDP- Osun), the Senate called for fair treatment of these graduates.

Senator Olalere highlighted that the issue of medical graduates from Ukrainian universities has been a concern for the National Assembly since 2022. He noted that in 2023, the House of Representatives and the Ministry of Health reached an agreement with the MDCN to allow these students to participate in qualifying exams like other students.

The Senate further urged the MDCN to organize the exams in each geo-political zone of the country, similar to the Law Schools, to reduce the financial burden on students and their parents.

During the plenary session, other senators who supported the motion emphasized the need for equitable treatment of these graduates.Senate President Godswill Akpiabio expressed gratitude to the sponsor of the motion, emphasizing its significance and the need for MDCN and Vice Chancellors to adhere to the resolutions of the Senate.

This development underscores the Senate's call for equal opportunities for Nigerian medical graduates from war-affected countries, aiming to alleviate their challenges and ensure fairness in the examination process.
