Aspiring doctors across Africa now have a fresh opportunity to begin their medical journeys without delay as St. George’s University School of Medicine (SGU) officially opens applications for its August 2026 intake.

In a statement released to *The Guardian* on Tuesday, the Grenada-based medical institution said the intake was specifically designed to align with the academic calendars across Africa, helping students transition directly into medical school without the need for a gap year.

With decades of experience training international medical students, SGU has built a strong reputation for preparing graduates for global healthcare careers. The university boasts a network of more than 25,000 alumni practising medicine in over 50 countries worldwide.

In 2026 alone, SGU students secured more than 800 US residency placements across 23 medical specialities, further strengthening the institution’s standing as a leading destination for international medical education.

The university also provides students with extensive clinical exposure through partnerships with more than 75 affiliated hospitals and health centres in the United States and the United Kingdom, giving students access to hands-on medical training in diverse healthcare environments.

Since 2007, SGU has maintained an academic partnership with Northumbria University, offering eligible students the opportunity to complete part of their studies in the UK.

Students admitted through the August 2026 intake can choose to begin their studies either at SGU’s campus in Grenada or at Northumbria University in the UK. Upon graduation, successful students will earn both a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from SGU and a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) degree from Northumbria University — a dual qualification aimed at preparing graduates for the growing global demand for healthcare professionals.

 Supporting African Students

According to Johannes Kraus, Regional Director for Africa at SGU, timing remains a major concern for many aspiring medical students across the continent.

“For African students, timing is the most critical element of a medical career,” Kraus said. “The August intake is designed to support students transitioning into our MD programs after completing their local studies, in line with their academic qualifications.”

He added that SGU’s strong residency placement record demonstrates the global opportunities available to African students who pursue their medical education through the institution.

 Scholarships and Financial Aid Available

To make international medical education more accessible, SGU says it offers a variety of financial aid and scholarship opportunities for qualified students.

Among the available support options is the SGU Medical Scholar Award, a merit-based scholarship designed to assist high-achieving students from international regions, including Africa.

Kraus noted that the initiative reflects SGU’s broader commitment to reducing financial barriers and expanding access to quality medical education for talented students worldwide. For many African students aspiring to build international medical careers, SGU’s August 2026 intake could provide a timely and globally connected pathway into the profession.
