SSANU, NASU Strike Paralyzes Activities at University of Jos

Academic activities at the University of Jos, Plateau State, were brought to a halt on Monday as members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) embarked on a seven-day strike. The strike, declared by the unions, aimed to demand the payment of four months of withheld salaries by the Federal Government after the 2022 nationwide strike.

Gates of the university were closed, leaving staff and students stranded as they attempted to enter the premises. Last Monday, SSANU and NASU had announced the commencement of the seven-day warning strike.

This action comes amidst similar strikes at other universities across the country, including the University of Ilorin, where SSANU and NASU members also embarked on strike in compliance with the directive of their national bodies.

The National President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim, had earlier indicated the unions' readiness for a nationwide strike, although the Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, claimed to be unaware of SSANU/NASU's planned strike.

The unions have cited various issues as grounds for their strike action, including the renegotiation of the 2009 Federal Government/SSANU agreement, reconstitution of governing councils of universities, and improved funding of universities.

The strike action is expected to continue until Sunday, March 24, 2024, unless the demands of the unions are met by the Federal Government.
