SSANU Women FULafia  holds awareness programme on breast cancer

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), women Wing of Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) has organised an awareness programme on prevention and treatment of breast cancer among the women staff of FULafia. 

Delivering her keynote address at the 4th regular meeting of the association, FULafia SSANU Women Leader, Comrade Becky Kajo,  said that the wing decided to invite an experts from the medical profession to sensitise women and girls in the University to inculcate the habit of frequent testing and screening of cervical and breast cancer in them with a view to achieving early diagnosis of the dreaded disease.

Becky explained that the awareness programme for the month of October tagged: “Breast Cancer Awareness” was aimed at clearing some misconceptions about the disease.

Dr. Oluseun Jemima Webawondu from the FULafia Health Centre, who lectured the women on how to do self-check, informed the women that "cancer cases are often detected late, thereby contributing to high mortality rate.

She demonstrated how to use fingers to search around the breast area for any lump or abnormalities.

The meeting was well-attended by SSANU women of FULafia where many of them wore colourful dresses as a symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

Some dignitaries who attended the meeting included Mrs Helen Bello, the Head, Staff Promotion and Productivity Unit, and Mrs Saratu Haruna, Head, Information Communication Technology.
