Students of the School of Forestry, Ibadan, have taken to the streets in protest following an alleged incident involving operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on October 24, 2023.

The School of Forestry students from Ibadan, Oyo State, assembled at the EFCC office in the state's capital to voice their grievances regarding what they claim was an intrusion by EFCC personnel into their school premises.

Reports suggest that EFCC agents held a brief meeting with the school's management before purportedly making some arrests. During this encounter, it is alleged that some students were injured, and in response, some students reportedly engaged in an altercation with EFCC personnel.

While the school authorities have remained silent on the matter, the EFCC issued a statement on Tuesday to address the situation.

The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, characterized the attack on EFCC operatives as unprovoked and urged for caution. He clarified that despite the provocations, EFCC personnel maintained restraint. He also dismissed rumors of any students or staff being shot.

The statement from the EFCC read, "The Commission wishes to assure the public that it will continue to perform its duties in line with its mandate, and unprovoked attacks against personnel of the Commission will no longer be tolerated."

It was emphasized that the EFCC operatives refrained from using force against the aggressors, firing warning shots into the air to disperse the unruly crowd. A rescue team was able to successfully free seven operatives who had been held by the protesting students.

Furthermore, it was reported that the main entrance gates to the college had been blocked with a vehicle believed to belong to one of the college's lecturers. The bus transporting EFCC operatives was also vandalized during the incident, with students and staff reportedly pelting it with stones and other hazardous objects.
