Students Take Legal Action Against Al-Qalam University Over Registration Fees

Three students have filed a lawsuit against Al-qalam University in Katsina regarding registration fees. The case is currently under consideration at the Katsina High Court.

The applicants, Hauwa’u Sani-Barda, Rabi’atu Sani-Barda, and Hafsat Sani-Barda, who were admitted to the university in 2018 and 2019 and graduated in 2022 and 2023 respectively, claim that the university failed to facilitate their mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilization due to outstanding fees.

According to their counsel, Muhammad Mukhtar-Lawal, the applicants filed an ex parte motion seeking judicial review in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). The motion aims to obtain leave from the court to apply for judicial review.

The judge, Abbas Bawale, granted the applicants leave to pursue judicial review through mandamus, emphasizing that further legal processes would follow, including serving the university with relevant documents for the court to proceed with the case.
