Three University of Benin (UNIBEN) students, rescued from a collapsed building in the Ekosodin community following heavy rainfall, are in stable condition and receiving treatment. The building, where many students resided, collapsed on Saturday.

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has confirmed that three students rescued from a collapsed building in the Ekosodin community are in stable condition and receiving medical care.The incident occurred on Saturday following a heavy downpour that began on Friday afternoon, causing a storey building, where several students resided, to collapse. Ekosodin, a neighboring community to the university, is known for housing many UNIBEN students.

According to a statement from the university’s management, a rescue team comprising security personnel, fire service staff, healthcare workers, students, and local police successfully rescued the trapped students. Initially, the three students were taken to the university's health centre, and two of them were later transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

"No lives were lost, and the affected students are in stable condition. The management wishes them a speedy recovery and commends the rescue team for their prompt action," the statement added.

An eyewitness account confirmed that while no fatalities were recorded, several students sustained injuries in the unfortunate collapse.
