In a heartwarming tale of resilience and determination, Christian Sampson, a young man who experienced homelessness, has defied the odds and earned a full scholarship to the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff in the United States.

Having completed his high school education at Wilmer Hutchins High School, Dallas, Sampson faced the harsh reality of homelessness, spending six months sleeping on the streets after a fallout with his family.

“When you try not to focus on the bad, good will eventually come to you. So I tried not to focus on the bad stuff that was happening, even though there was a lot of bad stuff happening,” he shared.

Surviving on the streets led to periods of absence from school, but Sampson's determination caught the attention of the Dallas Independent School District's homeless education program. Despite the hardships, the program provided him with essential resources and support through his high school counselor, Almethia Smith.

“He kept coming back. The determination…I’m just full, cause he’s gonna go places,” expressed Almethia Smith, Sampson’s high school counselor.

Christian Sampson's exceptional musical talent as a musician paved the way for him to secure a full scholarship from the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff to join their marching band. Focused on his passion for music, Sampson believes that pursuing a college education will not only align with his career aspirations but also lift him out of the challenging circumstances he faced.

“I’m a musician. I’m good at what I do. I know I’m gonna go to college and that’s gonna line me up to do what I wanna do for my career and that’s gonna line me up to get out of the position I was in,” he affirmed.

“There’s too much going on out here to not wanna help…help the people in the situation I was in. Help the people who can’t afford some stuff. Help the people not get evicted. Help the community. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done around Dallas,” Sampson expressed.
