Governor Sanwo-Olu Awards ₦10 Million to LASU’s Best Graduating Student, Isioma Nwosu Sybil

In recognition of her exceptional academic feat, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has awarded ₦10 million to Miss Isioma Nwosu Sybil, the best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session. Nwosu, a Biochemistry graduate, emerged top of her class with a 4.93 CGPA, earning accolades at the institution’s 28th Convocation Ceremony.
Lagos State University (LASU) held its 28th Convocation Ceremony from April 3 to April 10, 2025, celebrating the academic achievements of 11,917 graduates across various programmes. The highlight of the convocation was the outstanding academic performance of Miss Isioma Nwosu Sybil, who graduated with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93, the highest in her set.
In honour of her remarkable accomplishment, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a ₦10 million cash award to Miss Nwosu. The announcement was made during the convocation ceremony held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo campus. Represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the governor commended Nwosu’s academic resilience and called on other students to emulate her excellence, commitment, and perseverance.
The convocation also featured a lecture titled “Patriots, Citizenship and National Ownership: The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria’s Future,” delivered by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa. The session was chaired by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and former Governor of Kano State.
In a further show of recognition, LASU conferred honorary degrees on two distinguished Nigerians. Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), received a Doctor of Humane Letters, while Otunba Olufemi Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, was conferred a Doctor of Business for their notable contributions to national development.
Delivering her convocation address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello highlighted the university’s growing academic excellence. She reported that 8,711 students graduated with first degrees, including 192 with First Class honours. In addition, 971 diploma holders and 2,235 postgraduate students were conferred with academic awards.
Miss Nwosu's journey to academic success was marked by resilience. She shared that she once felt she had failed in life but overcame challenges through determination and support from her family and mentors .
