UDUS Chief Security Officer Warns Against Theft and Gambling

Colonel Abdullahi Gwandu, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), addressed the issue of theft within the university community on Monday. He warned students against engaging in stealing and gambling activities.

Colonel Gwandu highlighted the increasing incidents of theft in the university, particularly in school premises and hostels. He condemned the behavior and stressed the importance of students supporting one another rather than stealing from each other.

“Several issues of theft have been reported in the school premises. As far as security is concerned, we have been putting some measures in place and at the end of this action all the thieves among students will be caught,” he said.

He emphasized that those caught stealing would face the university's disciplinary committee and face expulsion. “The moment someone is caught stealing, we would follow the due process by making the person face the students' disciplinary committee. Such a person will pay for his/her action and be sent out of the university,” he added.

Colonel Gwandu recounted specific cases where individuals were expelled after being found guilty of theft. He also cautioned students against gambling, stating it could lead to theft. “The moment you are addicted to it, you cannot stop it at whatever age in life,” he warned.

The CSO announced that the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lawal Suleiman Bilbis, had provided the security unit with CCTV cameras to enhance campus security. “As soon as possible, the CCTV will cover the entire university because the installation is still ongoing. There are even some cameras in hidden places which are working 24/7,” he noted.

Colonel Gwandu assured that a team is monitoring the CCTV footage continuously, which has already led to the capture of some thieves. He urged students to be vigilant and take care of their personal belongings.
