Graduates from the University of Ibadan's (UI) College of Medicine and Dentistry are facing a frustrating delay in receiving their certificates,creating a significant roadblock in their professional journeys.

Reports indicate that the class of 2022, consisting of 208 graduates in medicine, surgery, and dentistry, faced significant setbacks. However, only 75 of them have received their certificates, leaving the remaining 133 graduates in limbo.

One affected graduate shared their frustration, revealing that many of their peers had engaged in unofficial communication with university staff regarding the certificate delay. Unfortunately, repeated assurances to return the following month have yielded no tangible results. "Many graduates of our set have been in unofficial communication with some staff members of the university management regarding our plight, but they keep asking us to return the following months," he stated.

Upon graduation, the students were granted provisional licenses allowing them to undergo their one-year housemanship. However, the issuance of permanent licenses by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) hinges on the availability of their university certificates. "Despite completing our housemanship in December last year, obtaining our certificates from the school has been a protracted challenge. The university keeps postponing the issuance, and what started as a minor issue for a few has now affected more than half of our class," the graduate added.

Expressing their frustration, the graduates of the MBBS 2022 and BDS 2023 classes wrote a letter to the University management on July 11, 2024, outlining the challenges they are facing due to the certificate delay. They highlighted how the absence of their certificates is creating significant obstacles in obtaining the necessary credentials to advance in their careers.

Furthermore, one graduate emphasized, "UI is just wasting our lives," mentioning missed opportunities for further studies and the detrimental impact on their mental health.
