UI Hosts and Wins 8th Afro Varsity 3x3 Basketball Challenge
The University of Ibadan was granted the hosting rights of the 8th Afro Varsity 3x3 Basketball Challenge organized by the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU).
At the end of the two-day event, the University of Ibadan male team emerged winner of the male category and will be representing Africa at the 2026 International University Sports Federation (FISU) University World Cup 3x3 Basketball, which will take place in Macau, China in October 2026.

To kick-off the championship, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration of the University of Ibadan, Professor Peter O. Olapegba, FNPA, fspsp, while speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, noted that the presence of universities and delegations from across the African continent is a testament to the unifying power of sports and the shared vision of fostering excellence, friendship, and healthy competition among African youths.
Professor Olapegba stated that the championship is more than just a contest of skill and athleticism saying that it is a celebration of Africa’s vibrant youths, a platform for cultural exchange, and a powerful instrument for strengthening bonds across borders.
He asserted that beyond physical well-being, the event offers a platform to promote leadership, discipline, teamwork, and mutual respect, which according to him are values that are essential for the development of the African continent.
The DVC expressed the university’s deep commitment to the holistic development of its students, reiterating that UI recognises sport as a critical component of education which complements academic pursuits and prepares students for life beyond the classroom.
He added that hosting such a prestigious tournament reflects the university’s dedication to advancing university sports and supporting initiatives that empower young people across Africa.
He described the athletes as true ambassadors of the event and urged them to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship, fairness, and integrity throughout the tournament, reminding them that while victory is sweet, the friendships they build and the experiences they gain will last far beyond the tournament.
The Secretary General of FASU, Mrs. Peninnah Kabenge disclosed that the FASU 3x3 Basketball Championship has grown into one of the flagship events on the African university sports calendar.
She said that the game of 3x3 basketball embodies speed, innovation, teamwork and resilience which she described as qualities that reflect the spirit and aspirations of Africa's youth.
Mrs. Kabenge said that the gathering was not merely designed for participants to compete for medals and trophies but to celebrate African unity, strengthen friendships among universities and nations, and empower young people through sports.
The Secretary General also stated that university sport remains one of the most effective platforms for developing future leaders, asserting that it nurtures discipline, teamwork, perseverance, respect and excellence.
According to her, these values prepare them, not only to excel in sports but to become leaders in their professions, communities and nations, disclosing that the impact of university sport can be seen in the remarkable success stories emerging across our continent.
The Acting President of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), Dr Ajibua Michael Alayode stated that basketball is a classroom for discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience, saying that the Afro Basketball Challenge has over the years proven that university sport is a powerful engine for talent discovery and national development.
He disclosed that NUGA exists to harness the energy, intellect, and potentials of Nigerian students through competitive sport, acknowledging that the basketball challenge is where tomorrow’s national team players, coaches, and administrators are born.
Dr Alayode disclosed that many students who have graced the courts have gone on to represent Nigeria at the World University Games and the All-African Games.
He appreciated the University of Ibadan for hosting the competition, commending the dedication and sacrifices of the Local Organizing Committee
Sixteen male teams and 12 female teams from sixteen universities participated in the competition.
