The University of Ibadan (UI) has reiterated its commitment to safety as a key priority in its pursuit of academic excellence and community service.

The declaration was made by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Juwon Tunde Arotiba, while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE), led by its Chairman, Engr. Abiola Olufemi Ajayeoba, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale.

The visit came ahead of NISafetyE’s 10th International Conference, scheduled for October 9, 2025, themed “Fire Safety.” Professor Arotiba assured the delegation that their requests would be conveyed to the Vice-Chancellor and emphasized UI’s commitment to collaborations that advance safety, knowledge, and societal development.

Speaking during the visit, Engr. Ajayeoba highlighted the institution’s mission to ensure safer environments across all spheres of life. “Safety begins from the home in our kitchens, in our cars, on the road, and everywhere we go. Everyone must have this consciousness and practice it daily,” he said, stressing that safety is a collective responsibility.

On the conference, Engr. Ajayeoba explained that the first day would involve field visits and lectures on safety practices, while the subsequent days would feature seminars, research presentations, and workshops. He requested provision of a university bus to transport participants during the first day and sought UI’s support to enhance participation and strengthen the institution’s role in advancing national safety standards.

Concluding his remarks, Engr. Ajayeoba reaffirmed that “Safety is everybody’s business, and it must be kept at the forefront of our daily lives.”

In recognition of UI’s dedication to safety and welfare, NISafetyE Chairman, Engr. Ajayeoba, decorated the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, as the “Safety Ambassador of the University of Ibadan.”
