The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, has approved the appointment of 16 new Acting Heads of Departments (HODs).

In a bid to strengthen academic leadership and improve service delivery, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, has approved the appointment of 16 new Acting Heads of Departments (HODs).

The appointments, announced in letters signed by the Vice Chancellor, are effective from October 2024 to September 2026.

Among those appointed are Dr. Juliet N. Ekpang (English and Literary Studies), Dr. Oboyi Joseph (Mathematics), Dr. Chigozie Uzomba (Paediatrics), Dr. Andem Andem Bassey (Zoology and Environmental Biology), and Dr. Joseph E. Udosen (Surgery). Others include Dr. Ekpenyong Nsa (Estate Management), Surv. Dr. Stephen Utre (Surveying and Geoinformatics), and Dr. Oquetan Ibor (Environmental Management).

Also named were Tpl. Eddie James (Urban and Regional Planning), Dr. Sunday Eneh (Business Management), Dr. Patrick Mbum (Marketing), Dr. Daniel Ikpi Ewa (Physiology), Dr. Ubong Bassey Akpan (Obstetrics and Gynaecology), Dr. Patrick Akwaji (Plant and Ecological Studies), Dr. Ebu Vincent Tawo (Forestry and Wildlife Resources Management), and Dr. Nnette Ekpenyong (Community Medicine).

In addition to the new appointments, Prof. Obi extended the tenure of Dr. Fidelis Anake Atseye as Head of the Department of Banking and Finance until December 2024. The extension, which takes effect from October 21, 2024, is to enable Dr. Atseye to oversee the department’s upcoming accreditation process slated for October and November.

Prof. Obi, in her address to the newly appointed HODs, emphasized the importance of efficient leadership and timely results, noting that her administration will not hesitate to sanction any department failing to meet performance expectations.

These appointments reflect UNICAL’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and promoting effective management within its departments.
