UNICEF Urges Protective Measures as Cholera Outbreak Threatens Schools

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a call for extensive measures to protect school children following the outbreak of cholera. Chief of UNICEF's Lagos Field Office, highlighted the urgency of curbing the spread of cholera and urged for increased awareness across the country to educate the public about cholera outbreaks and preventive measures.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a call for extensive measures to protect school children following the outbreak of cholera in Lagos and some states in Nigeria.

 The organization has emphasized the need to prevent any disruption in the academic calendar due to the spread of the disease.

Celine Lafoucrier, Chief of UNICEF's Lagos Field Office, highlighted the urgency of curbing the spread of cholera, noting that the outbreaks have had a critical impact on children and young people. She stressed that children, especially those attending schools, are particularly vulnerable to the disease, facing significant health risks and high mortality rates.

Lafoucrier emphasized the importance of implementing good sanitation practices, promoting hygiene, ensuring access to clean water, and encouraging regular handwashing with soap and water in schools to combat the outbreak effectively. “There is, therefore, an urgent need for good sanitation, hygiene practices, improved access to clean water, regular handwashing with soap and clean water in order to combat the outbreak in schools,” she explained.

 In addition to calling for improved hygiene practices within schools, Lafoucrier urged for increased awareness across the country to educate the public about cholera outbreaks and preventive measures. This, she noted, is crucial for addressing the current health crisis and ensuring the safety of children in schools.
