The University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the Unilag Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA), is set to host an International Communications Festival from April 16th to 18th, 2024, according to a statement released by UMCAA President, Mr. Wale Williams, which was made available to Vanguard on Thursday.
The festival, designed as a homecoming for all graduates of the Mass Communication department, aims to serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas aimed at enhancing the communication profession to contribute to national development. Additionally, the event will commemorate the elevation of the department to faculty status following the federal government's unbundling of Mass Communication.
Mr. Williams emphasized the significance of the event, stating, "As the premier mass communication department in Nigeria, we are convening at our alma mater to engage, collaborate, celebrate, and leverage our collective experience to support our evolving faculty. Our goal is to ensure that the department has access to optimal resources as it progresses."
The festival agenda includes the UMCAA Entrepreneurship Competition, where winning teams will receive financial support for their business ventures. Furthermore, a three-day exhibition will showcase products developed within the department.
The festival will feature distinguished speakers such as renowned producer Remi Ogunpitan of IBST and Hollywood filmmaker Ose Oyamendan on the first day. The second day will include sessions with veteran journalist and former Managing Director of Independent Newspapers, Mr. Ted Iwere, and Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, Director General of the National Orientation Agency, discussing New Media & National Orientation.
The highlight of the event will be the 6th edition of the UMCAA Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) delivered by Mr. Simon Kolawole, publisher of The Cable Online, addressing the theme 'The Dilemma between Journalism & Activism'. Invitations have been extended to communication institutions across Nigeria to participate virtually in the lectures.
Additionally, students of the department will benefit from speed mentoring sessions conducted by experienced UMCAA members during the first two days, aimed at providing guidance and mentorship. The festival aims to underscore the importance of establishing effective communication channels for national progress.
