The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Green Hub commemorated its first year of operations with a grand celebration themed around environmental sustainability. Held on June 25, 2024, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the UNILAG Sports Centre, the event titled "UNILAG Sustainability RACE: Showcasing Our Efforts and Commitment to Do More" highlighted the achievements of the Green Hub since its inception.

The anniversary event commenced with an Environmental Celebrity Walk, inaugurated at the Senate Building by the Vice-Chancellor and graced by the Honourable Minister of State for the Environment. Participants proceeded to the Indoor Sports Hall, where the main highlight was the "Recycling Bazaar," showcasing innovative recycling initiatives.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Matthew Ilori expressed concerns about environmental degradation caused by widespread littering and plastic waste. He emphasized the need for continuous advocacy to promote environmental sustainability, calling for proactive measures to mobilize collective efforts towards a cleaner environment.

Dr. Olisa Hadijat Bukola, representing the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), lauded UNILAG's efforts in environmental advocacy, noting collaborative initiatives that have reduced waste and created employment opportunities.

The Honourable Minister of State for the Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, represented by Mrs. Akinyemi Olusola, highlighted government initiatives aimed at achieving environmental sustainability goals through partnerships and compliance measures.

Dr. Abdulganiyu Adelopo of UNILAG Green Hub acknowledged the contributions of students, staff, and vendors towards campus sustainability, dubbing them "Partners in Progress." He underscored the importance of community engagement in fostering a sustainable future.

Mr. Samuel Iboroma from Nigeria Bottling Company Limited pledged support for UNILAG's environmental sustainability efforts, emphasizing the potential impact of collaborative partnerships.

The event also featured colourful dance performances and short plays by pupils from UNILAG Staff School and University of Lagos Women Society (ULWS), adding a festive touch to the celebration.

In his closing remarks, Engineer Olaniyi Ayeye, Coordinator of Building and Facilities Maintenance at UNILAG, reiterated the university's commitment to environmental stewardship and thanked attendees for their support.
